Indie Films over Foreign Films

Indie Films

Indie films are films created to illustrateour current society, issues, documentary, creative and educational representing our country. Artists in these films are not popular though they represent our culture as Filipinos. These films are created by our local directors here in our country. Yet I wonder, why does this mean that the indie film industry is slowly dying?

The quality of television is less anticipated by viewers because of the greater influence TV shows, brands and advertisers selling out on the market or the movie industry. Its because they are owned by big companies with huge titles on them. They are not into marginalizing on profit, ratings and production (I know its ugly).

TV Produced Shows

TV shows are becoming absurd as part of our society. The contents of these  shows are becoming less valuable in our daily living. And I’ve been observing these are not really healthy for a third world country like ours. Still we idolize the known artists in these shows rather than the contents of the indie films.

Here are reasons why indie films are not much appreciated:

1. Due to our Economy

I wouldn’t blame producers creating films that are funny and exciting with lesser value to our people. Rather its not helping our economy to become productive. One rule of producing is to educate people. Its great to watch these shows and films but our economy is dying out and people are more interested in watching foreign films than indie films. People should be aware of that.  Would you watch “Babae Sa Septic Tank” over “Transformers 2”?  That’s degrading because an Indie film is a part of our culture.

Indie filming is part “Malikhaing Sining” or “ Creative Art”. It’s an art of filming for filmmakers. Its not only money that is a value to our local filmmakers but they would want to create a more healthier society that is mature and realistic, unfortunately many are still relying on what buys their attention.

 2. Idolization

As part of our culture, as Filipinos, its been half a century that we idolize these artist from the industry that doesn’t separate them from politics, business and other form of fields. Even as politicians, artists who runs for presidency. We still give our support for these people even though we are not looking at the services they can cater, just because they are VIP (known people) from the industry. Foreigners are amazed we still do.

       3.Public Demand

Most Filipinos would want to watch shows and films that doesn’t earn them personally. They don’t mind if what are the deeper contests of these films, all that matters, its imported and its from outside the country.

In my opinion, I’d rather watch Indie Films than foreign films because it teaches in some aspects of life that I haven’t seen in any other films.

      4.Western Influence

Since most of the international artists are from the west. They have dominated the film industry over Bollywood, over Europe and other continents because these creates confusion on what buys our attention most.

      5.Interest

It seems that most viewers think that Indie films are boring. The viewpoint of directors in indie films doesn’t depend on what will they gain from you. But they are committed to their passion in creating films; educating people, producing quality films that extracts a healthier society and creates a more vivid vision on how to handle our commitment to ourselves that it is reality we are seeking, to help ourselves.

However, its a choice that we need to get to know better of ourselves and our culture. You might find yourself become interested with Indie films created by our very own Filipino filmmakers. You might realize that somehow I let you understand the importance you get from indie filmmakers.

Its hard to explain the economics of understanding why the film industry here in our country is dying.

On the contrary, foreign films are products of foreign filmmakers, they are marketing brands, ads and fantasy to us. Its a product of their imaginzation that meets their modern technology, one we don’t have. So let us be mature in choosing which is wise for us.

Urbandub Concert

On March 26, 2011 – Saturday next month, the indie band from the South, Urbandub will be performing live at The Tent Matina Town Square.  Other performances will include Spasm, Polar Depth, Ten in a row, Azimuth and Davao Karate Club.
