Copyrights Awareness
In August 2011, to recall our seminar I have attended at DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) XI, Monteverde DC. We had an itimate seminar with Atty. Jesus Antonio Ros, an intellectual property lawyer from Manila.
The DUAAD Team had an intimate discussion with the lawyer with several profounding questions over the years.
He imposed mostly on the rights of every individual on solely owning their output of work. It can be in any category, object, product or idea.
It’s important that we own our work, ours alone.
Copyright
Copyright is the ownership of an intellectual property within the limits prescribed by a particular nation’s or international law. -searchsecurity.techtarget.com
Copyleft
Copyleft is a play on the word copyright to describe the practice of using copyright law to offer the right to distribute copies and modified versions of a work and requiring that the same rights be preserved in modified versions of the work. In other words, copyleft is a general method for making a program (or other work) free (libre), and requiring all modified and extended versions of the program to be free as well. -wikipedia.org
Few terms to be familiar on:
1. Trademark
2. Watermark
3. Patent
4. Infringment
Davao, less aware on copyrights
Though we can’t deny the fact that most of the individuals (professionals, practitioner and student) have not yet been educated on copyrights. Though we had a rare opportunity to have an intimate session with Atty. Atonio, it was a well-embraced opportunity to discuss and be well-aware of our own rights.
As artists, we have to anticipate, the moment we create and produce an idea. It is well anticipated that we should be aware of its exposure specially the public. The exposure of being stolen and copied.
Possibilities that might happen when it happens:
1. Any form of works can be taken or can be claimed by any other individuals– The best thing to do, record an agreement (verbal or written). Place a watermark or signature to ensure it’s copyrighted.
2. Your work can be copied – Whoever wants to claim it, can claim it.
3. Make sure clear competition – As a good businessmen or enthusiastic individual, be sure that nobody is intimidated with your work or else, you’ll loose credibility and ownership on your work.
4. Record or document any transaction – Remember that hearings, court trials can be imminent without proper documentation. It’s really advised that you are going to record any transactions, in any way to protect yourself and your works.
5. Check the IP office in manila (Head Office) – Make sure that you can generate your own original name for your company. So that it doesn’t overlap on any companies. It might be that your company name has already existed.
6. Use a blogging tool to secure your work
7. Create your own copyrights notice or disclaimer
This happens to any professional or individual who owns his/her works and unaware of his/her rights over an output. Its a good reminder to have an ownership that we are well aware of these things before it gets before us. Specially when we are exposed to the social media, networking and any public material that can be exploited by any individual.
